1. RULES

We have basically two sets of rules, strict and less-strict. Before each TT race, we have a discussion. Sometimes we use the rules of the last race without any modification, sometimes we change minor things. So, here are the rules we use most often:

A.) Less-strict Truck Trial rules, or "friendly" rules:

1. Only Lego parts are allowed, except for the non-Lego parts listed below.
2. Only Lego tyres and rims are allowed, except for 1.9" (108 mm outer diameter) custom crawler tyres. If you use Lego, 94.8 mm tyres are recommended, and you can use Power Puller tyres as long as the width remains inside the limit.
3. The Lego Trial Truck has to look similar and proportional to a real truck. It can be any normal off-road truck, military truck, or trial truck. The base for the proportions is the diameter of the wheel. Of course, there is some tolerance, front and rear overlying can be 1-2 studs less (or more), total length can be 5-8 studs different. The only important thing: your truck has to look proportional. Your approach angles have to be under 90° in front and rear too. 60° is fine, 80° too, but 90° isn't.
4. The truck's width has to be minimum 25, maximum 29 studs in the wheels. The body can be slightly different. For example, if the truck is 27 studs wide at the wheels, and the body is 29 studs, that's fine.
5. Ground clearance has to be roughly proportional compared to the wheel size. It means usually 80% of the wheels' diameter. If the original truck has larger ground clearance, you can use more than 80%. If the original truck has less, you can use 80% maximum.
6. Body is obligatory, a truck without body (or at least a cabin) can't participate in the competition. Body has to "look good", a truck with 1 panel and 3 flex cables will be disqualified.
7. You can use tissues to cover the back, but paper isn't allowed. Non-Lego strings, O-rings, rubber bands, can be used for anything.
8. The truck has to be remote controlled with Lego Power Functions, Lego radio system, or Sbrick.
9. Gearbox is allowed, as long as it works with remote control.
10. The number of motors (for any function) and the weight of the truck can be chosen freely. Any kind of motors and controllers are allowed. Mindstorms too.
11. Lubricants aren't allowed.
12. During the race, each participant gets failure points (e.g. for touching the side markers of the track, help with hand, leaving the track). Ranking is based on the number of failure points. In case failure points are tied, time decides.

Example race for these rules: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWG0bBorLiI

B.) Strict Truck Trial rules:

1. Only Lego parts are allowed, except for the non-Lego parts listed below.
2. The Lego Trial Truck has to look similar and proportional to a real truck. It can be any normal off-road truck, military truck, or trial truck. The base for the proportions is the diameter of the wheel. Of course, there is some tolerance, front and rear can be 1-2 studs less (or more), total length can be 5-8 studs different. The only important thing: your truck has to look proportional.
3. The truck has to use some type of suspension. Torsional chassis doesn't count as suspension. The truck may be articulated.
4. The truck's width has to be minimum 26, maximum 28 studs in total. You have to stay within this range even with the proportional look. The cabin's minimum width is the truck's width at the wheels.
5. Only wheels from the following Lego sets are allowed: 8297 and 8110.
6. Maximum ground clearance is 11 studs.
7. Gearbox is allowed, as long as it is controlled remotely.
8. The truck can be controlled remotely, or with wires.
9. You can use textile to cover the back, but paper isn't allowed. Non-Lego strings, O-rings, rubber bands can be used for anything.
10. Lubricants/grease are allowed for gears and axles.
11. You can use any type of Lego motor for propulsion, with the number of motors limited as follows:
- XL PF: 1 motor for every 900 g
- L PF : 1 motor for every 750 g
- M PF : 1 motor for every 500 g
- RC Buggy: 1 motor for every 1000 g
- NXT motor: 1 motor for every 1000 g
12. For functions other than propulsion, you can use any kind of Lego motors without limitations.
13. Body is obligatory, a truck without body (or at least a cabin) can't participate in the competition. Body has to "look good", a truck with 1 panel and 3 flex cables will be disqualified.
14. Ranking is based on time. Failure points (touching the side markers of the track, help with hand, leaving the track) are added as time penalty.

We are trying to make "logical" rules, with as many possibilities and freedom in build, as possible. Minor changes can be in these rules for the future races, but basically, if you want to participate, you should build with these rules. Nowadays, we use more often the "friendly" rules, which has no motor/weight ratio.

Sometimes, we organize crawler races instead of TT. These are much less complex rules. The first 20 minutes of this video is a perfect example of our crawler races: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJrPsgTk44E (it was a track test, usually we don't have so soficticated track, but we are trying to make something similar from wood, rocks, etc.). The blue crawler is an example, which constructions and form is allowed by our usual crawler rules. Basically, the only important thing is that your crawler has to look like a real crawler, and of course it has to be Lego (with the usual exceptions, like custom crawler tyres, rubber band, strings).

Feel free to ask, if you have any questions about these.

MALUG Truck Trial in english

HozzászólásSzerző: Tomi » 2015. aug. 21. 10:45

Hello all!

I made this topic for foreigners who are interested in our TT/Truck Trial (or crawler) events in Hungary. You can ask and post anything about TT here: events, competitions, etc.

A few albums about some of our competitions, before 2013:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=439183

Write only in english please, no hungarian or other language allowed.

I'll post our usual TT/crawler rules here soon.
